School of Civil Engineering was founded in 1987, originally called Department of Architectural Engineering. It was one of the earliest departments in the institute and was renamed as Department of Civil Engineering and School of Civil Engineering in 2004 and 2011, respectively. The school currently has four undergraduate programs, i.e., Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, Water Supply and Drainage Science& Engineering, Road, Bridge and River-crossing Engineering. It attracted nearly1500 full-time students studying in Nanyang at present.
The school has qualified teachers with remarkable achievements in teaching and scientific research. At present, it has 57 members of faculty (41) and staff (16), including7 professors, 14 associate professors and 12 teachers with doctoral degree. Besides, there is 1 expert with government special allowance from Henan province, 2 technical and academic leaders of Henan province, 1 technical and academic leader of the education department of Henan province, 1 technical and academic leader of Nanyang and 5 young academic backbones in institute level.
There are more than 20 people with engineering practice related qualifications, such as senior engineer, engineer, supervisory engineer, registered structural engineer, registered architect, registered cost engineer, constructor and so on. With the continuous optimization of education background, professional title and learning-origin structure, the faculty structure is becoming more and more reasonable. Now the school has 7 teaching and research sections, namely structure section, road and bridge section, construction section, engineering management section, mechanics section, water supply and drainage section, and rock-soil section. It has published more than 80 monographs and textbooks, as well as undertaken more than 30 national and provincial teaching and scientific research projects.Among them, there are 3 items from Natural Science Foundation of China, 2 items of the first prize of provincial scientific and technological achievements (writing category), 1 item of the second prize and 3 items of the third prize of provincial science and technology progress. Besides, there are another more than 20 items of teaching and scientific research achievements, with more than 300 papers published, and more than 70 recorded by SCI, EI and ISTP.
The schoolhas been adhered to the principle of paying equal attention to teaching, scientific research and subject construction. The course of “Construction of Civil Engineering” was awarded as the provincial resource sharing course in high quality, and 121 courses were awarded as the high-quality course in institute level. Civil engineering specialty was named as one of the provincial characteristic specialized construction points, the specialized comprehensive reform pilot projects and the pilot reform specialties of talent training mode in undergraduate engineering education. Structural engineering was identified as the provincial key discipline. The scientific research team of monitoring and control of engineering structure performance was awarded as the innovative science and technology team of Henan province. The trunk course teaching team of civil engineering specialty in application-oriented university was named the provincial teaching team. The school has some scientific research platforms and technical services centers, such as the Henan water resources and ecological environment protection academician workstation, the ecological environment and disaster prevention and reduction collaborative innovation center and so on.
In the past five years, about 40 students in our school have got prizes in “Higher education cup”, national advanced mapping technology and product information modeling innovative contest for undergraduates, the national information application contest, the national college students' mathematical modeling competition, and the national universities engineering calculation software competition. In the projects such as college students’ structural design competition of central-south region, for the national level, 4 students got the first prize, 17 students got the second prize, 2students got the third prize, and for the provincial level, 16 students got the second and third prizes.Graduate employment rate has remained above 95%, standing in the forefront of all the schools in the institute. Up to now, it has trained more than 3000 professional and technical students to the nation. Graduates are throughout the whole country, and they are widely praised by the society.
Civil engineering experiment center covers an area of 2000 square meters, with 997 sets of instruments and equipments which have the total value of more than 7.2 million RMB. It has 8 laboratories, including mechanics of materials, civil engineering materials, engineering surveying, soil engineering, hydraulics, water quality engineering laboratory, and the structural laboratory, computation center and so on. The reference room has nearly 7000 copies of professional books, 5 sets of professional teaching software. In addition, more than 20 species of professional journals both at home and abroad were available. In order to achieve the aim of training applied talents, the school has signed with 11 companies, namely Henan Fourth Construction Co., Ltd, Henan Tiangong Construction Group Co., Ltd, Henan Zhongyuan Road &Bridge Construction (Group)Co., Ltd, Nanyang Construction and Development Engineering Co., Ltd, Nanyang Architectural Design Institute, Nanyang Avenue Road Survey and Design Co., Ltd, Nanyang Sewage Treatment Center and so on, establishing a stable off-campus teaching practice base. The experimental apparatus and practice base meet the needs of undergraduate education, scientific researches and offering foreign technical services.
In order to improve students' comprehensive quality, better adapt to the civil engineering industry’s demands for professional and technical engineers, the school focus on constructing the study style and doing well in students’ education and management. Moreover, taking “the perfection of self-cultivation” and “scientific innovation” as themes, the school promotes the quality education in-depth, and continuously improves the students' comprehensive quality and creative ability.
